What makes an exhibition stand sustainable in practice

Sustainability on a stand is decided at the drawing stage, not on the show floor. Four choices do most of the work.

  • Reuse. Build the structure so it can be dismantled cleanly, stored and put up again at the next show.
  • Modularity within a custom design. Panels, frames and light boxes sized to repeat, so one stand can be reconfigured for a different space.
  • Graphics separated from structure. Graphics date faster than carpentry. If the print is a separate layer, you change the message without changing the stand.
  • Short transport runs. We are in Tamworth, Staffordshire, about 20 minutes from the NEC Birmingham. For a Birmingham show that is a short, direct run rather than a long haul.

None of that is exotic. It is good joinery, sensible engineering and a plan for what happens after the show closes.

02

Why custom build, done properly, outlasts the alternatives

There are three stand categories in the UK and they are not the same thing.

Modular is off-the-shelf: pole and panel, pop-ups, aluminium frames with infill panels. Pre-manufactured to standard sizes at a standard height of around 2.5m. It can be self-built and it suits exhibitors doing five or more shows a year on a modest budget.

Hybrid is a mixture of modular and custom build, usually system light boxes combined with purpose-made elements. It is much less common now.

Custom build is designed and made from scratch for one brand and one space, with no system limits.

T2 build custom stands only, for spaces from 20 square metres up to 100 square metres. We do not sell modular or hybrid stands as a product line. We explored modular systems many times over the years and invested in the kit, but clients kept asking for more personalisation, greater height and shape, and a more dynamic presence. Where a system component such as a light box is genuinely the right answer, we use it inside the custom build.

The sustainability argument follows from that. A custom stand built by in-house carpenters, electricians and fabricators can be specified for a second, third and fourth outing. A disposable build cannot.

Reuse, storage and the rebuild cycle

Our full service covers design, 3D visuals, build, graphics, transport, installation, breakdown and storage. The last two matter most for reuse.

Breakdown. De-rigging takes nearly as much labour as build-up, which is why it is a real line on the quote, typically 1,500 to 4,000 GBP. Careful de-rig is what keeps panels, floors and frames fit to use again. Rushed de-rig is what turns a stand into skip waste.

Storage. We store stands and quote storage separately. Between shows your structure sits with the team who made it, so repairs, touch-ups and alterations happen in the same workshop.

Rebuild. For the next show, we reconfigure the existing elements to the new space, replace only what is worn and print fresh graphics. Over three or four shows that is a markedly lower material load than commissioning a new stand each time.

More than 75% of our work comes from existing clients, which tells you how often stands come back to us rather than being built once and forgotten. We designed and built Lely's key UK event stand at the NEC for six consecutive years.

What a sustainable build costs

We are open about numbers, because ESG decisions still have to pass a budget meeting. Design and 3D visuals are free of charge for qualifying enquiries. From there, the usual split on a custom contract looks like this.

  • Fabrication and build: typically around half of any contract value. From 4,000 GBP at the small end, 8,000 to 20,000 GBP mid-range, up to 50,000 to 60,000 GBP on large contracts.
  • Graphics and print: 3,000 to 8,000 GBP mid-range, and 12,000 to 18,000 GBP on graphics-led builds.
  • Electrics and lighting: 1,200 to 5,000 GBP, up to 6,000 GBP on larger builds.
  • Transport and logistics: 600 to 2,000 GBP.
  • Installation: 2,000 to 5,000 GBP depending on contract size.
  • Breakdown: 1,500 to 4,000 GBP. Storage is quoted separately.

A typical mid-range custom build totals 16,000 to 44,000 GBP. When a stand is reused, the fabrication line is the one that shrinks at the next show, while graphics, transport, installation and breakdown continue as normal. That is the honest shape of the saving.

05

Made in-house, which is why reuse actually works

We have a permanent in-house team of carpenters, electricians and fabricators in Tamworth. Not a list of subcontractors.

That matters for sustainability in three plain ways. The people who built your stand are the people who take it down, so they know what can be saved. Repairs and alterations are done in our own workshop rather than quoted out. And when a design needs to be adapted for a different hall, the makers are in the room while it is being drawn.

We are an ESSA member and have been designing and building bespoke stands since 2001. Clients include Soudal, Pinarello, Dentally, Journeo, Software of Excellence and Horiba Mira. We built the BSA Guns stand in Hall 6 at The Great British Shooting Show at the NEC Birmingham.

06

Venues, timings and what we need from you

We work regularly at the NEC Birmingham, our home venue about 20 minutes away, the ICC and Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, Coventry Building Society Arena, ExCeL London, Olympia London and Harrogate, plus international shows.

Lead times. Design approval and the CDM declaration can take up to six weeks. Appoint your stand builder at least two months before the show. Finished artwork is needed four weeks out. Early appointment is itself a sustainability measure: rushed jobs mean express freight, last-minute reprints and材 waste.

Who this suits. Exhibitors taking space-only stands from 20 square metres up to 100 square metres, with a multi-show plan or a repeat annual event, and an internal case to make about waste and reuse.

Tell us the shows, the space sizes and what you have to report on internally. We will come back with ideas, 3D visuals and a clear quote.

Common questions

Your questions, answered.

How do you make a custom exhibition stand reusable?
We design the structure in sections that dismantle cleanly, keep graphics as a separate layer, and specify components that can be reconfigured to a different space. The stand is then stored with us in Tamworth and rebuilt for the next show with fresh print.
Do you sell modular stands, since they get reused?
No. T2 build custom stands only, for spaces from 20 to 100 square metres. Modular is off-the-shelf pole and panel, pop-ups or aluminium frames at a standard 2.5m height, and suits exhibitors doing five or more shows a year on a modest budget. Where a system component such as a light box is the right answer, we use it inside a custom build.
Does a reusable stand cost more up front?
A typical mid-range custom build totals 16,000 to 44,000 GBP, with fabrication usually around half of the contract value. Reuse mainly reduces the fabrication line at subsequent shows, while graphics, transport, installation and breakdown continue each time. Design and 3D visuals are free of charge for qualifying enquiries.
Do you store stands between shows?
Yes. Storage is part of our full service and is quoted separately from the build. Your stand is stored with the same in-house team of carpenters, electricians and fabricators who made it, so repairs and alterations happen in our own workshop.
How early should we appoint you?
At least two months before the show. Design approval and the CDM declaration can take up to six weeks, and finished artwork is needed four weeks before the show. Early appointment also avoids the waste that comes with rushed reprints and last-minute freight.
Which venues do you build at?
The NEC Birmingham is our home venue, about 20 minutes from our workshop in Tamworth. We also work at the ICC and Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, Coventry Building Society Arena, ExCeL London, Olympia London and Harrogate, plus international shows.
